Developer’s third bid at hotel on Drake’s Island
A DEVELOPER has submitted a planning application to create a new luxury hotel and spa on an island off the Devon coast.
Drake’s Island, near Plymouth, is a 6.5 acre island in the Plymouth Sound and it’s from there that Sir Francis Drake set off in 1577 to circumnavigate the world.
The planning bid to create a hotel on the island was submitted to Plymouth City Council earlier this month and is the third attempt from former Plymouth Argyle chairman, Don McCauley.
The most recent attempt was turned down by local planners last year over concerns for local wildlife.
A statement from the developer, quoted in the Plymouth Herald, says:
“Rotolok (Holdings) Ltd are pleased to announce that they have resubmitted an amended planning application for the regeneration of Drakes Island.
“The proposals combine a new 43 bed luxury boutique hotel, spa, pool and fine dining restaurant with a visitor experience and ability for people to access the island and learn about its layered history and role in Plymouth’s deep maritime past.
“The owners of this unique asset wish to address the pressing need to repair the dilapidated buildings and bring the Island back to life.
“Equally important the works and operations need to be undertaken with respect to the diverse range of habitat and species.
“Rotolok are very keen to create an iconic destination, which undoubtedly will form an integral part of Plymouth Waterfront rejuvenation.
