New boutique hotel proposed in Edinburgh

A NEW 17-bedroom boutique hotel has been proposed in Edinburgh.

The new hotel is planned in Smith’s Place, between Leith and the east of Edinburgh city centre.

An application to change the use of a 1930s-built townhouse at 3 and 5 Smith’s Place has been submitted to local planners by Waugh Taverns.

A supporting statement with the planning application notes, “the premises are easily accessed by public transport via the bus routes on Leith Walk, and there will also be the possible extension of the tram link in due course. It is an ideal position for a boutique hotel.”

The construction in 1936 of the Category B-listed property, designed by Edinburgh architect Ebenezer James MacRae, “made possible a belated completion of Smith’s Place,” according to Historic Scotland. The building was initially used as offices for the Edinburgh Corporation Tramway depot.

More recently, 3-5 Smith’s Place was used by Turning Point Scotland and it currently has permission to operate at Class 4 Social Work Offices.
