Council aids Newcastle’s Stephenson Quarter redevelopment

A major redevelopment project in Newcastle which would feature a new boutique hotel  is now more likely to go-ahead after getting financial backing from the Council.

A 60 bedroom boutique hotel will be built alongside a 250 bed four-star hotel in the Stephenson Quarter regeneration.

The 10 acre mixed used site will also feature restaurants, residential apartments, exhibition space and commercial offices.

The Journal Live reports that a new funding package has been agreed which will see Newcastle Council borrowing £30 million, with some of that being loaned to the developer, Silverlink Holdings, to build the four star hotel – which will be operated by Crowne Plaza – and the rest used to buy up plots of land close to the site which is adjacent to Newcastle Central Station.

New boutique hotel in Southwark approved

A boutique bedroom hotel in Southwark, London, was given the go ahead by local councillors on Monday.

The new hotel will be at 75 – 76 Blackfriars Road, close to Southwark underground station, and will require the refurbishment of the Grade II listed building. A property to the rear with an address in Burrows Mews will be demolished to make way for a three storey building.

The new ten-bedroom boutique hotel will be designed by Linedota architects, who previously worked on La Suite Marylebone and the University Arms in Cambridge.

The issue was decided upon by a local “community council” to which planning matters are devolved to by Southwark Council.

Wirral’s “Sail” hotel crashes on the rocks

Plans for a new boutique hotel in West Kirby have been sunk by local councillors.

The Sail Boutique hotel and sailing training school would have brought inwards investment in excess of £5million to the area and created up to 50 jobs but the plans capsized when they were brought before Wirral’s Cabinet last Thursday.

Carpenter Investments were selected as the preferred developer for the scheme in 2007 but the project was hit by local opposition, criticism of the designs and a concern over the loss of public parking spaces at Dee Lane.

Council officers who have been working with Carpenter recommended to councillors that they confirm their continued support for the project, but the Cabinet instead took the wind out of the developer’s sails and killed the project off.

The Wirral Globe quotes Cllr Gerry Ellis, who represents the Hoylake ward, as telling the meeting:

“This scheme will bring total traffic chaos to West Kirby because of the number of people wanting to use the hotel and therefore using up spaces.

“I have supported every development for the town and I would love to see a hotel in West Kirby but just not here. The council is currently undertaking a consultation with the public about services and what they think.

Boutique hotel in South Derbyshire approved

South Derbyshire council has given the go-ahead to a new boutique hotel in Willington.

The ten bedroom hotel forms part of a new development at Mercia Marina which will also include a gastro pub, spa and pool.

At the core of the development’s design is a four storey, octagonal “lighthouse” which will offer visitors exceptional views across the marina.

Developers came up with the proposals with local designers, Pinelog, who specialise in using natural materials and who have incorporated wood cladding in their design.

Nautical design elements, in keeping with the marina location, will be present throughout the interior, according to the planning application which was approved by the council’s planning officers last week.

‘ME London’ confirmed to arrive in time for 2012 Olympics

A large new boutique hotel from Sol Melia has been confirmed for London in time for the Summer of 2012.

The international hotel group has purchased a new Norman Foster creation in the Holborn district which will offer 173 guestrooms and a large conference centre facility.

The new boutique hotel will be part of the ‘ME by Melia’ brand of hotels from Spanish-based, Sol Melia.

The building itself was formerly the City Bank building and is being redeveloped as a large hotel. The acquisition of the building was worth 133million euros to seller, Anida, and Sol Melia will be spending another 52 million euros completing the redevelopment project.
