De Niro’s London boutique hotel gets go ahead
WESTMINSTER Council has given the green light to a new boutique hotel backed by Robert De Niro in Covent Garden.
The authority’s Planning Committee agreed the scheme at a meeting earlier this week.
Hollywood actor De Niro, who already owns the five star Greenwich Hotel in New York, teamed up with Covent Garden estate owner Capco and BD Hotels for the application, which was submitted in April this year.
The 83-bedroom Wellington Hotel will be developed behind period frontages in Covent Garden and include luxury spa facilities, two restaurants, a deli/café and a members’ club, all built around a central courtyard conservatory.
Deputy leader of Westminster city council, Cllr Robert Davies, commented: “This is one of the finest schemes we have considered for Covent Garden in years. The design is of the highest quality and it fits the bill as a Covent Garden building that meshes the new with the old. The hotel will attract visitors from all over the world.”
Speaking earlier this year, De Niro commented: “The Wellington Hotel would honour the heritage of the area, while bringing the best of what we’ve done in New York to London”.
