CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a new 100-room boutique hotel at Greenwich Market, south-east London, have been dropped.

The landowners, Greenwich Hospital, have announced they won’t proceed with the scheme which was given planning permission following a public inquiry having previously been thrown out by the local council.

Greenwich Hospital says it will now “enhance and improve” the existing market rather than carry out the wholesale redevelopment.

Boutique operator Bespoke Hotels have now removed the proposed hotel from their website and company chairman, Robin Sheppard, declined to comment further.

Greenwich has in the past week seen the opening of the new Mercure Greenwich hotel.
